Description

DSC01887.JPG (852658 bytes) Kevin King prepares his Estes Express 2-stage rocket for flight.
DSC02000.JPG (729865 bytes) Me (Kevin Yackley) and Bryan Dierking prepare for the eagerly- awaited- yet- minimally- subscribed TRG 3" Goblin Race.  Bryan used an H148 Redline motor and I used an H123 White Lightning motor.  Bryan had more average thrust, but I had 20ns more total impulse.  My altimeter beeped out 2885 feet for this flight.  We called the race a tie since Bryan left the pad first (thanks to the redline propellant) but I touched down sooner.
DSC01998.JPG (736980 bytes) This is my 3" Goblin called "the Money Shot".  I successfully achieved my NAR L1 certification on this flight.

     - 2.1 pounds
     - 22.5" tall
     - Aerotech H123W Motor
     - Perfectflite MiniAltimeter WD
     - 2885 feet altitude

DSC01999.JPG (548835 bytes) This is Bryan Dierking's 3" Goblin.

     - 1.75 pounds
     - 22.5" tall
     - Aerotech H148R Motor

DSCF0769.JPG (1114604 bytes) Kevin King and his Estes Thunderstar.  This is Kev's first cluster rocket.  He's got 2 C6-5's under the hood there.
DSC01946.JPG (794716 bytes)DSC01974.JPG (773801 bytes) This my scratch-designed rocket "Certifiable" which flew on an Aerotech I161 White Lightning motor.

It was supposed to be my L1 cert rocket, but it had a "deployment anomoly" at 2070 feet and "landed hard" on the playa.

I'm currently rebuilding "Certifiable-II"

Brent_L3_Predator_RG1S2423.JPG (1554197 bytes)Brent_L3_Predator_RG1S2463.JPG (300981 bytes) This is Brent Dougherty's rocket "Predator" on a successful L3 certification flight.

      -  15 feet tall
      -  88 pounds
      -  M1939 motor
      -  5649 feet altitude

Congrats, Brent.

The following photos are self explanatory.  Just setup and launch prep.

DSC01926.JPG (491450 bytes) The "Up Part" was most excellent indeed.  This is the liftoff of "Strike's" 2nd flight.  Although we didn't fly the altimeter on this flight, it appeared to achieve 600-700 feet or more, visually higher than the other contestants (according to independent reports).
DSC01929.JPG (829136 bytes)DSC01932.JPG (882238 bytes) Unfortunately, we had another "anomoly" at apogee..  We got a successful ejection.  It's just that the motor ejected instead of the ball!  We left a crater in the lakebed in the shape of a bowling ball.

I don't REALLY think that a Friday the 13th launch was to blame... but....  At least everyone had fun and everyone involved with the TRG should be very proud of the Bowling Ball Team.
